>>>”And perhaps you are misinformed, but the old planet is indeed capable of supporting the agriculture needed to sustain a planet full of vegetarians – now and for the future.”
No it could not. The natural eco system on earth needs “control systems” which this planet provides. You forget that those insects, for example, who are “herbivores” would also be feeding on plant life. Without predators what would stop these hervbivores from completely wiping out plant life? What would stop other animal plant eaters from doing the same?
Wheras, from a human point of view, the natural world, with the necessary predators, may seem very cruel, this natural balance of things keeps this old planet going.
It is not coincidence that carnivores developed on this planet – whatever species they may be. They are a necessary “control” that actually protects plant life.
As previously stated, if humans keep animals for food, then it should be in a humane environment.
Without plant life, the earth's food chain would collapse, and the loss of the provision of oxygen by this particular life form would cause the demise of all other life on this planet. However as the most essential plant forms on this planet are the grasses – the removal of trees etc. in order to provide the “agricultural” space to grow enough cereals etc. will result in what is now happening in the world's rain forests.
I would not deny that every human has the choice of what they eat – but if they all became vegetarians – then unfortunately many of them would starve.
