Sunday brunch is quickly becoming my favorite meal of the week. Whether it’s eating the big vegan breakfast — faux sausage, tofu scramble, black bread and vegetable hash — or the vegan French toast at Whole World in Columbus, or cooking my own brunch, like I did this past weekend, I can’t get enough of this big breakfast, early lunch.

The meal prepared this Sunday consisted of collared greens, steamed, with onions, garlic and faux Italian sausage, with cornbread biscuits and Navy Bean gravy, which happened to be one of the better tasting gravies I’ve eaten — pre-vegan or present.

My dad, ever the carnivore, even declared afterwards that I could almost make him a “vea-gin” (he pronounces vegan like it rhymes with pagan) with food as delicious as that. The resulting Facebook comments differed however, with one co-worker declaring the meal looked “gross.”

Comments like that always strike me as odd. Granted, I don’t expect many people to salivate over fake-meat products and I’m certainly not trained as a chef in food preparation. But what’s so gross looking about greens, onions, garlic, biscuits and gravy? Are we so trained to only think the greasiest, most fat-ridden and unhealthiest foods are appetizing?

But I digress … For Memorial Day, we whipped up from a recipe found at theppk.com a BBQ sauce that was quite delicious. The BBQ covered some tempeh, which we then grilled and ate with corn on the cob and avocado-potato salad.

All in all, this was one of the best-eating holidays I’ve had. If you’d like recipes to any of these dishes, send me an e-mail.
